Traditional And New Treatments For Acne: A Review

Everyone who has to deal with the appearance of acne seeks a "quick fix" to eliminate the pimple, bumps and, in some cases, painful lumps and cysts that occur with an acne outbreak. When the pores of the skin become clogged with dead skin cells and oil, acne can result in the form of either non-inflamed lesions, such as white heads and black heads, or infected and inflamed lesions, such as cysts and nodules. While no treatment exists that cures acne, there are many treatments to control acne and reduce the risk of scarring that can occur with acne.

For mild cases of acne, relief can be found in the many over the counter topical treatments found in grocery and drug stores. The active ingredients in these creams, lotions, and washes include one or more of the following: benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and salicylic acid. These remedies provide temporary relief of acne symptoms.

If the over the counter medications do not seem to control an acne breakout, a doctor can prescribe topical ointments derived from Vitamin A, such as those that contain tretinoin, adapalene or tazarotine. These medications promote the replacement of skin cells and work to inhibit the clogging of the hair follicles that leads to the appearance of the lesions associated with acne. Some of the ointments also contain topical antibiotics to treat the infection associated with inflammatory lesions.

Dermatologists can prescribe oral antibiotics to treat moderate to severe acne. These medications are used along with topic benzoyl peroxide treatments to decrease the chance of the person developing a resistance to antibiotic medications. Antibiotics are not recommended for chronic cases of acne.

Another medication used to treat deep cysts is isotrenion. Although this medication is an extraordinarily effective treatment, it has significant side effects including increasing liver enzymes, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Isotrenion is not prescribed for women of childbearing age because it has been associated with birth defects. Additionally, this medication is associated with an increased risk of depression and suicidal ideation. In certain cases, corticosteroid injections are used on a short-term basis to treat the nodules and cysts associated with severe acne.

Two new treatments for acne are light therapy and laser therapy. Treatments involving light therapy kill the bacteria associated with acne as well as decreasing the amount of oil produced by the body. Laser therapy also destroys bacteria as well as damaging the oil producing glands to decrease the amount of oil production.

While it is not possible to cure acne, the variety of treatments available can lessen the impact acne has on a person's appearance and improve one's self-esteem.
